Sunshine and Bulbs: What's inspiring my new collection

Sunshine and Bulbs: What's inspiring my new collection

Emily Peltier

My sewing practice is all about balancing practicality, expression and sustainability. Choosing secondhand fabric that best suits the project, the season while also meeting the inspirational brief is the biggest challenge and delight of the job. For me, spring means bright colours and florals (duh), but while I may curate collections for specific events and seasons my ultimate intention is to create pieces that will be at home in your wardrobe well beyond a single moment.

Coats & Vests

The changeable weather this time of year is perfect for a quilt coat, or my new upcycled quilt vests. I’ve been stashing the sweetest vintage quilts in yellows, pinks and blues to create these pieces. I've combined four main quilts to create a collection of four coats and two vests that share textiles across the six unique one-of-a-kind pieces. I’ll be launching this limited collection at my next market date, but in the meantime, make sure to check out the coats available on my website!

Crescents and Totes

The new season brings new variations and fabrics for my classic and sidekick-sized crescent bags, using fabrics that feel cheery for the season but outlast any trends. Expect ruched straps, patchwork quilts, and candy coloured classic prints. In order to best use up larger cuts in my fabric stash, I’ve also brought back an easy carry-all, the Casey Tote: an easy way to have a one-of-a-kind Woodbrick bag that is practical and accessible.

Scarves from What Can’t Be Bags

Not every beautiful textile is suited for the structure of a bag — and that’s where the scarves come in. Using materials that are too lightweight, or delicate for bag construction, I’ve designed scarves that allow those fabrics to shine. Soft merino blends, silky textures, and flowy gauze. These scarves add warmth without weight and colour without commitment.
